A Song Moved Me to Tears

Micro Spice was performing “Die With a Smile” when the words hit me like a ton of bricks.
“If the world was ending, I’d wanna be next to you.”
That was enough.
I sat there with emotions overflowing as every meaningful relationship in my life passed through my mind. I vacillated between the man I was before forty and the man sitting there now, nearly twenty years on the other side of it.
That may be the biggest pivot in my life. I am still here, carrying nearly twenty more years of experience. I bear every bump and bruise. Every time I opened my heart. Every time I wasn’t emotionally mature enough to handle what came with it. Every time I loved somebody but didn’t yet know how to love them well.
Age doesn’t erase any of that. If anything, clarity makes you look at it more honestly.
The refrain reminded me that our time will come. None of us knows when. But I guess the hope for all of us is that, if it is God’s will, when the world ends for us, we’ll be holding on to that special someone.
And we will, indeed, die with a smile.
That is what art can do. A song can find the part of you that has been quietly carrying an entire lifetime and, without warning, open the door.
